Portuguese pianist Artur Pizarro to perform at NSU Oct. 15

Pianist Artur Pizarro will present a recital at Northwestern State University Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. The concert is part of the Louisiana Piano Series International. Tickets are $15. Students are admitted free. Dr. Francis Yang and Dr. Christine Burczyk Allen are the organizers of the Louisiana Piano Series International.

The program will include works by Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Kreisler-Rachmaninoff.

A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Pizarro gave his first public performance at the age of three and made his television début on Portuguese television at the age of four. He was introduced to piano by his maternal grandmother, pianist Berta da Nóbrega, and her piano-duo partner, Campos Coelho. He was immersed in the tradition of the ‘Golden Age’ of pianism and received a broad education in both the German and French piano schools and repertoire.

Pizarro won first prizes in the 1987 Vianna da Motta Competition, the 1988 Greater Palm Beach Symphony Competition and the 1990 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition. He performs internationally in recital, chamber music and with leading orchestras and conductors.

He has recorded extensively for Collins Classics, Hyperion Records, Linn Records, Brilliant Classics, Klara, Naxos, Danacord, Odradek Records, Phoenix Edition and Capriccio.

Pizarro has received various awards from his native Portugal for services to classical music and culture including the Portuguese Press Award, the Portuguese Society of Authors award, the Medal of Culture of the City of Funchal and the Medal of Cultural Merit from the Portuguese Government. He has recently been awarded the Albeniz Medal in Spain.
