NATCHITOCHES – Almost 800 non-perishable food items were donated recently to the Salvation Army in Shreveport for distribution to needy area families after the “SAAC Hunger” collaboration between the Northwestern State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the NSU Student Government Association.

The initiative took place at the Nov. 7 NSU Demons’ home football game and in the week following the contest, said Carrie Greene, assistant athletic director for student-athlete development at Northwestern State.

Lady Demon soccer competitor Natalie Pena, her sport’s SAAC representative, coordinated the effort, said Greene. The NSU SAAC plans to make it an annual community service project.

Anyone donating a food item was eligible for a 50 percent discount off a general admission ticket to the football game. NSU students, who get free admission to the games, were given T-shirts if they donated.

“I’m so proud of the efforts of Natalie and our students to organize such a major community service event,” said Greene. “There are a lot of moving parts that go into something that large, and even with bad weather, they were able to donate a large amount of food to those in need. I look forward to seeing this event grow in the coming years.”
