Folklife Feature: Mike Snowden

Natchitoches native Mike Snowden, who handcrafts cigar box guitars, will be performing original music on his guitars at the 2017 Folk Festival at NSU on July 15. He will also have a number of his guitars and CDs of his music for sale.

Snowden, who lives in Marietta, Ga., has constructed and sold over 1400 cigar box guitars to music enthusiasts all over the world, including such celebrities as actor Jeff Daniels, Kristan Bush of Sugarland, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, and Ozzy Osborne, who visited Snowden’s workshop in March to film a segment on cigar box guitars that will air on A&E’s “Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour” reality show in the fall.

He has been featured on CNN and the Charles Osgood CBS radio show and is considered one of the leading figures in the resurgence of interest in cigar box guitars.

Snowden has recorded six CDs of his original music. His sixth album, entitled “Southern Cigar Box Guitar Thunder,” will be released on July 21.

An article in “Cigar Aficionado Magazine” affirmed that “Snowden makes serious music come out of his instruments.”

He will perform at 2 and 5:30 pm on the West Stage of the NSU Coliseum and at 3 pm on the Main Stage.

The 38th annual Natchitoches-Northwestern Folk Festival will be held July 14-15 in Prather Coliseum on the Northwestern State University campus. Festival hours are 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets are $13 for an advance all-events pass through July 11. Advance tickets are free for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the door for $6 for Friday night, $10 for all day Saturday or $6 for Saturday after 5 p.m.
