Northwestern State University’s picturesque Chaplin’s Lake was the scene of intense competition as a record 20 teams vied for bragging rights at the 3rd Annual Dragon Boat races. This popular event has rapidly become an area-wide favorite, growing each year. Teams came from nine campus organizations, and local businesses. The City of Natchitoches and Natchitoches Sheriff’s Department renewed their annual rivalry in a seaborne showdown bereft of mercy. Fort Polk sent two teams of soldiers and their families, sponsored by the Historic Downtown Development Commission. Bands entertained the crowd throughout the day and vendors served up food to hungry rowers.
The event has a serious purpose, however. It is a major fundraiser for the NSU Alumni Association. This year’s race is expected to bring in $35,000 to help fund scholarships and alumni events.
