NSU Scholarships and BBQ-a Winning Combination!

BBQ 2018_3732

NSU’s Alumni Tailgating Plaza was the scene of intense culinary combat as 15 adult competitors and 5 “Kid’s Que” competitors from Louisiana and Texas battled it out at the 2018 Cookin’ on the Cane BBQ competition June 2. The annual competition, in its 9th year, is sponsored by the Natchitoches Jaycees. This year’s event is expected to raise $1,500 for the Jaycees’ endowed scholarship at NSU.

The BBQ chefs spend hours slow cooking, basting and smoking their entries before submitting them to a panel of local volunteer judges overseen by a certified IBC judge who explained the rules and criteria for judging. The Cookin’ on the Cane contest is a sanctioned International Barbecue Cookers Association event in which the competitors can earn points for the coveted “Cooker of the Year” title.

The tantalizing aromas and superb flavors of the competition make this one of our area’s favorite events. More than that, it is an opportunity to help our area’s children finance their education at NSU. Well done Jaycees!
