Two Claiborne Parish men traveling through Natchitoches Parish were arrested on multiple felony narcotics charges that resulted in the seizure of illegal narcotics during a traffic stop near Campti on Thursday morning, March 7, according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones.
NPSO Patrol Division deputies were patrolling on US-71 near Campti when they stopped a 1985 Ford pickup truck for No License Plates. Deputies identified the operator of the vehicle as Erick McGowen, 36 of Homer.
During the traffic stop, deputies learned through a NLETS computer check that McGowen did not have a drivers license and had prior criminal arrests.
Deputies also smelled a strong marijuana odor coming from the vehicle.
A passenger in the vehicle was identified as Broadus D. Davis, 38 of Homer.
An additional sheriff’s deputy responded to assist.
Deputies asked McGowen if he had any illegal narcotics in the vehicle in which he responded “he had some marijuana in the vehicle.”
Both McGowen and Davis were in the process of being detained, however, Davis resisted by kicking one of the deputies in the groin. Davis attempted to run away but was taken into custody.
During a search of Davis person, deputies discovered three bags of suspected methamphetamine, two suspected ecstasy pills, pharmaceutical narcotic pills, and individual wrapped bags of suspected synthetic marijuana.
A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of a small amount of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
A Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS Unit responded to treat one of the deputies for a laceration to the hand.
As a result both suspects were arrested:
McGowen was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center and charged with Possession of CDS I Marijuana, Possession of CDS II Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving under Suspension, and No Vehicle License Plate.
Davis was transported and searched again at the Natchitoches Detention Center. During a search of his jacket, corrections officers found 3-cellophane bags containing 279 ecstasy pills concealed in his jacket.
Davis was booked into the NPDC, charged with Resisting an Officer, Battery on a Police Officer, Simple Escape, 2-counts of Possession of CDS I Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, 2-counts of Possession of CDS II Narcotics with Intent to Distribute, 2nd or Subsequent Offense, and Taking Contraband into a Penal Institution.
Both McGowen and Davis remain in the Natchitoches Detention Center awaiting bond. The seized narcotics will be submitted to the crime lab for narcotics analysis. The vehicle was impounded.
The case will be forwarded to the Natchitoches District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Sgt. J. Augustus was assisted by Deputy D. Caballero in the arrests.
