Reliford, who will complete his degree in Electronic Engineering Technology this year, completed a summer internship at Georgia Tech researching “Compact Light sources for Biological Applications.” He was then asked to participate in a full semester Internship during the Fall 2018 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is a part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST promotes U.S. industrial competitiveness, advances measurement science and develops measurement standards.

“Ronald was fortunate to work directly with NIST Material Scientists to study the metrology of depositing thin films on silicon substrates,” said Dr. Jafar Al-Sharab, head of NSU’s Department of Engineering Technology. “His research at NIST has been submitted for publication in The Journal of Microscopy and Microanalysis. The Engineering Technology Department is very proud of Ronald’s accomplishments this past year. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Reliford is the first of NSU’s Engineering Technology students to take an internship at a premier scientific institution like NIST.

“Internships provide students with experiential learning opportunities and can help demonstrate a student’s readiness for the workforce,” Al-Sharab said.

Recognizing the important of internships, NSU’s Engineering Technology Department established an annual Spring Internship Day conducted in conjunction with the NSU Career Center through the Handshake Initiative.

This year’s event will be Friday, March 15, when students will be able to meet with industrial companies and other organizations that have existing internships. Reliford will be present to share his experiences first-hand, Al-Sharab said.
