The first couple of spring signees for the Northwestern State women’s basketball team gave the Lady Demons some depth in the backcourt and on the wing.
The third will give Jordan Dupuy’s squad some size.
Dupuy announced Friday the addition of 6-foot-2 Julia Sion, a post player from Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial High School.
Sion nearly averaged a double-double in her senior season, scoring 11.9 points and grabbing 9.4 rebounds per game as Port Arthur Memorial advanced to the UIL Class 5A state playoffs.
Sion was a first-team all-district selection and helped Memorial share the District 21-5A title and reach the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Sion’s addition lengthens a Northwestern State frontcourt that lost a pair of 6-foot-1 seniors in Libba Gilliam and Leah Barnes.
“Julia is a versatile post player who will allow us to play our up-and-down style,” Dupuy said. “She can score with both hands, run the floor, rebound out of her area, and has a soft touch. There is still so much untapped potential there as well. We not only added a great player but a great person and family as well.”
Sion also competed in track and field as a jumper at Port Arthur Memorial.
As a junior, Sion averaged a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds per game. Port Arthur coach Kevin Henry told the Port Arthur News prior to Sion’s senior season she spent the summer working to expand her skill set.
Sion chose Northwestern State over Southern Illinois.
“My decision to sign with Northwestern State University was a dream come true,” Sion said. “NSU has everything I have been looking for in a college. I believe I will succeed on and off the court. On my visit, everyone gave off a family vibe, which made me automatically know that I wanted to become a Demon.”
Sion joins Seward County (Kansas) Community College guard Kalen Green and Hinds (Mississippi) Community College forward Nakaylis Washington in the Lady Demons’ spring signing class. That trio signed with Northwestern State after the Lady Demons added Texas prep standouts Anessa Dussette (Manvel) and Karyn Ford (YES Prep Gulfton) in the fall signing period.
