Here’s some tips to help you get started:
Pick the perfect pumpkin! Find a fresh pumpkin with a sturdy stem and a flat bottom so it won’t roll.
Cut the bottom! Cutting your pumpkin’s lid from the bottom helps prevent the sides from caving in later.
Scoop it all out! Scoop out all the pulp and then scoop some more so there’s a thin inner wall, which makes it easier to pierce the shell when you begin carving.
Sketch it first! Sketch your carving design on paper first and then tape it to the front of the pumpkin. Use a fork to poke holes along the lines you want to carve.
Keep it fresh! Spreading petroleum jelly along the cut edges is said to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin starts to shrivel after a few days, revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.
Spice it up! Sprinkle a little bid of cinnamon inside your pumpkin’s lid so it will smell like a pumpkin pie when you light the candle.
