City Council considers annexation of 275 acres on and around Monroe Drive

Several residents in the Monroe Drive area attended Monday night’s City Council meeting, Jan. 13, to discuss an agenda item regarding the extension of the City Limits of the City of Natchitoches. The City is looking to annex 275 Acres. This agenda item came before the Council at its Oct. 15 meeting. The item was tabled and was then reintroduced at Monday’s meeting with some amendments (SEE DIFFERENCES IN MAPS). Several residents had requested to stay with the Parish and a few in attendance at the meeting asked the same. Mayor Lee Posey assured those residents that wished to remain in the Parish that they could do so. The Council will make its final vote on this item at its next meeting.

  1. “Several residents had requested to stay with the Parish and a few in attendance at the meeting asked the same. Mayor Lee Posey assured those residents that wished to remain in the Parish that they could do so.”

This is copied from the above article. I have questions, and so should all the residents of that area. Does the mayor mean that anyone who opposes the annexation into the city can just speak up and say, I don’t want to be in the city, even if they are in the middle of the block? Then they are exempt from the annexation? What makes it ok for some and not for others? Who decides who is exempt? Or does it mean yes you will remain in the Parish, but quietly say, but you are in the city, too. Is this a play on words?

So what’s going on mayor? Favors in the annexation plan is a bit strange. Have you asked all residents if they would like to get the same favor as the ones who attended the council meeting? Or do they not get favors for some reason? Getting a new road sounds great, but will it happen? Sewer lines, when would that happen? in the next 10 years? 15 years? 20 years? I wish people could count on promises, but they are mostly just dust in the wind.

  2. Obviously the City cannot grow without annexing new territory and without growth both local and federal funding will be lost in some situations. I’m happy for growth and prosperity when it is agreeable among the residents and local government. I also agree that pot holes are all over the City and Parish and before long I doubt anyone will come any festival or ball park events because of these conditions.

I am embarrassed when out-of- state parents or tourists enter Natchitoches and travel our streets both on and off campus. Most of the streets are deplorable; perhaps because there seems to be no company in Natchitoches that actually understands HOW to build a TEXAS street or road so that it will last a number of years. Don’t blame it on the soil; just cross the State lines anywhere within the State and feel the difference. A rain shower or water from a car wash will wipe out a newly overlaid street almost overnight. (The Campti Cutoff road overlay has last longer than most in the area. Why?? Seriously, WHY?)

  3. The city can’t keep up with what they have now. That money could go a long way toward repairing what the city has ignored for years. Why not build another ball park instead of annexing more land?

    • Results speak for themselves. Take a look at parts that were annexed over the last 15-20+ years and see how it turned out vs the promises that were made at the time.

    • And yet, I can remember when there was a parish school system in North Louisiana (Ouachita, I think) that didn’t recognize the holiday even after it was declared a national holiday.

      • It was Ouachita Parish. Then Superintendent Lannie Johnson felt the holiday could be better observed with a school program for students on that day. Of course, public outcries forced Mr. Johnson to eventually comply and allow the students a day to run free.
