Happy New Year! I hope you are as excited as I am about today being the first
day of a brand new year. I love new beginnings, fresh starts, and most of all changed
lives! Often I’m asked what I enjoy the most about being a pastor and my answer is
always, “seeing Christ change lives.”

The reason we hear so much about New Year Resolutions is because most
people know there are things that they need to change in their life. Maybe you have
made a few resolutions yourself, like a resolution to focus more on your family or
marriage than you have in the past or live your life with a better attitude. Maybe you
desire to take better care of yourself physically or you’ve resolved to break some
addictive habit that is negatively impacting your life. I think resolutions are a good thing
because to make one, a person has to give some thought and consideration to the
changes they need to make.

However, we all know that many resolutions seldom last to the end of January.
One reason we often fail in keeping resolutions is because we fail to actually do what
we say we will do. Actions really do speak louder than words! It’s one thing to make a
resolution to eat healthier, but far better to walk pass the ice cream and go to the fruit
section when in the grocery store. Real change takes place in the doing more than in
the saying.

I’ve always been encouraged by the final words of II Corinthians 6:2 which says,
“now is the acceptable time, behold now is the day of salvation.” As we begin a new
year, I hope we not only consider but actually take the steps to experience needed
changes. Maybe you have made a list of resolutions and that’s a good first step. But I’m
convinced there are three things that will help you see them through to the end.

• Turn Your When into Now! Most changes fail because we are waiting for better
conditions to get started. We think when the holidays are over or when the job gets
better or when life slows down more. Start Now! Now is always the best time! Don’t
put off until tomorrow what you know you should do today.

• Turn Your Intentions into Action. The road to failure is paved with good intentions.
And last but not least…

• Turn Your Heart Completely to God. The truth is that most life changes are
impossible without God’s power and grace. Many times we fail to see real change
take place because we think we can make the changes in our own strength and
power. The truth is change happens when God changes us from the inside out.

May the Lord bless you and your family with an awesome 2021! Today is a great
day to get started!

  1. So true! Thank you for the challenge of allowing our Savior to lead and guide us through the resolution of changed we need to make. This reminded me of the song,”Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full on His glorious face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace “
