Boil Advisory Issued; February 17, 2021

BOIL ADVISORY
Natchitoches Water System
PWS ID# 1069007
Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana

EFFECTIVE: February 17, 2021

On February 17, 2021, at approximately 8:00 a.m. the City of Natchitoches issued a press release issuing a Boil Advisory for certain areas within the City’s Water Distribution System. Immediately, the City of Natchitoches is now issuing a BOIL ADVISORY for the entire Natchitoches Water Distribution System including Waterworks District 1 due to a low pressure problem on February 17, 2021. This drop in system pressure below 20 pounds has been caused by the winter weather conditions we have experienced over the past several days placing a strain on the City’s water system due to frozen water lines and broken pipes resulting in a loss of water pressure.

Because of this drop in system pressure, the water within our water distribution system is of questionable microbiological quality.

This BOIL ADVISORY is to remain in effect until rescinded by the Water System.

It is recommended that all consumers in the above mentioned area disinfect their water before consuming it (including fountain drinks), making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing of foods by the following means:

Boil water for one (1) full minute in a clean container. The one minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. (The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a clean bottle or pouring it from one clean container to another, or by adding a pinch of salt to each quart of water that is boiled.)

Again, please be sure to disinfect your own water prior to consumption until you have been advised otherwise.

PLEASE REDUCE YOUR WATER CONSUMPTION IF AT ALL POSSIBLE AT THIS TIME.

This Boil advisory does not affect the remainder City of Natchitoches Water Distribution System.

Date: February 17, 2021
For Immediate Release

NOTE:

The City issued a Boil Advisory earlier this morning, but is now receiving numerous calls questioning why the City has shut the water off to its customers. The City has NOT turned off any valves to the water distribution system. What our customers are experiencing is low water pressure or zero pressure due to the strain on the water distribution system from frozen and/or broken pipes. Please be patient as we try to alleviate the strain on the water system and for those with pressure please limit your water consumption.

  1. Boiling water with this much visible brown particulate mater doesn’t seem to be having any affect. This water is not even close to being safe for consumption. May need to try collecting and boiling snow.

  2. This Boil advisory does not affect the remainder City of Natchitoches Water Distribution System. What does this mean???
And what about ice makers, does freezing the water protect us???
