District Attorney Billy Joe Harrington announced the guilty plea and sentencing last week in a 2019 vehicular homicide case.
Luis F. Salas-Hernandez, 34, of Caddo Parish, pleaded guilty in the 10th Judicial District Court to vehicular homicide in the death of Juan Guzman-Olivo.
Salas-Hernandez was operating a vehicle on La. Hwy 117 when the his vehicle struck the rear of the Guzman-Olivo’s vehicle. The impact caused Guzman-Olivo’s vehicle to crash, resulting in his death.
Salas-Hernandez failed a field sobriety test administered by law enforcement at the scene of the crash. Upon arrest, Salas-Hernandez blood was drawn at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center with the sample being to the North Louisiana Criminalistics Laboratory for testing. The result of the blood test indicated Salas-Hernandez blood alcohol concentration was .13%, which is almost twice the legal limit of blood alcohol concentration for drivers in Louisiana.
Upon pleading guilty, Salas-Hernandez was sentenced to an agreed upon term of 16 years of incarceration at hard labor with the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
“This case continues to be tragedy for the family of the victim, whose wife provided an victim impact statement in court prior to sentencing,” said District Attorney Harrington.
The case was prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Cloyd Benjamin, Jr.
