NCHS tries for 3-0 start tonight at home in Turpin Stadium

With the start of district play a week away, the Natchitoches Central football team is unbeaten but still looking for plenty of improvement after lopsided wins over Woodlawn in Shreveport and Peabody at home last Thursday.

Tonight in Turpin Stadium, NCHS shoots for its third straight victory against a fellow Class 5A foe that is coming off an embarrassing loss, and will doubtlessly be trying to make amends.

LAST GAME: Natchitoches Central defeated Peabody, 41-14, last Thursday. West Ouachita lost at Jonesboro-Hodge, 41-20, last Friday.

NOTES: After ending an 11-game skid, Natchitoches Central is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2001. The Chiefs are led offensively by Caylin Demars who already has run for 257 yards and five touchdowns. The NCHS defense has forced seven turnovers and has scored three touchdowns. West Ouachita will run a wing T offense and on defense, the visitors line up in a 3-4. Last week against Class 2A JHHS, West Ouachita outgained their hosts but committed five turnovers, including two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

NCHS had a very slow start and a scoreless first quarter in the opening win over Woodlawn. Last week in the win over Peabody, the Chiefs scored two touchdowns in the first 68 seconds, on a 5-yard run by Demars after a fumble recovery on the previous play, and on a 44-yard interception return TD by Jason Jackson on the next play from scrimmage. But Peabody fought back, dominated time of possession, and tied the game at 14. NCHS regained the lead just before halftime and took command in the third quarter.

NCHS COACH JAMES WILKERSON SAYS: “We’ve had another good week of practice. Our guys are in a spot they’ve never been before being 2-0, so we’re trying to stay focused, sticking to the plan of what got us here to 2-0. West Ouachita provides a little bit different challenge with the fact of being really sound in doing a couple of things. We’re not going to see a bunch of different formations but they’re really good at what they do. They are a really sound defense led by Walker Nelson at linebacker and Allen Dean up front. We just have to stay focused, pay attention to details, and do the little things right. We are excited about the atmosphere around the game, the new tradition of the Chief Walk, and the new student tailgate.

THEME: The theme for fans tonight will be White Out as NCHS looks to white out those other Chiefs in North Louisiana, so all NCHS fans are asked to wear white. Events for the game begin with the Chief Walk starting at 5:15. Come show your support to all the pep squads and cheer on the Chiefs football team as they enter Turpin Stadium. A short pep rally will follow right outside Turpin Stadium, and then free food will be available.

All students who purchase a student ticket early will be given a voucher and receive free food after the pep rally at the student tailgate. When the stadium gates open at 6 o’clock we will storm into the Teepee and watch our Chiefs go 3 and 0! All this information, including the route for the Chief Walk, can be found on NCHS social media pages, Facebook, Instagram @nchs.chiefs, and Twitter @NCHS_ATH.
