Obit: David Raymond Box, Sr.

April 30, 1935 – November 1, 2021

David Raymond Box, Sr. passed away peacefully on November 1, 2021 at the Natchitoches Community Care nursing home in Natchitoches, Louisiana. David was born on April 30, 1935 to Lloyd Eugene Box and Inez Durr Box of Powhatan, Louisiana. At the age of 23, he married the love of his life Venia and together they had three children.

David and Venia were residents of Natchitoches since marriage and were faithful members of Calvary Baptist for many years with David serving as a deacon in the church. Together they worked in the restaurant industry at the Demon Grill, Broadmoor Restaurant and the Union at Northwestern State University. They also purchased 40 acres and became chicken farmers for ConAgra, which later changed to Pilgrim’s Pride. David was a hard worker and wonderful provider for his family, handing down the same work ethic to each of his children and later his grandchildren. He was employed by the Natchitoches Parish School Board for over 35 years as a bus driver, witnessing the desegregation of the parish school system in the early 70s. David worked with the Natchitoches Parish Police Jury during the summer, working crews of young men.

David had a passion for all things that grow, taking much pride in his garden and outdoor plants. He was especially proud of his roses and loved having his picture taken with them. David’s heart for animals was evident to all who knew him. He loved raising rat terriers, spending time watching and caring for his chickens, and making his way down to the barn to feed the cows.

David was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Venia Box, his parents and two brothers , Milford Box and Jack Box and infant grandson, Jon David Box. Left to cherish his memory are his children Amanda Box Saucier and husband Warren, David Box, Jr. and wife Gena, and Angie Box Perot and husband Andy.

Priceless memories of their Paw Paw will forever be cherished by his 8 grandchildren: Chris Saucier and wife Jana, Meghan Bailey and husband Charlie, Brittany Atwell and husband Christopher, Hannah Wenninger and husband Ben, Mallory Roth and husband Jon, Trent Saucier and girlfriend Jenna Winkler, Whitney James and husband Jacob, and William Box.

More than anything, he enjoyed being able to experience the joy of having 9 great grandchildren: Sam Bailey, Wyatt Atwell, Lily Bailey, Tucker Saucier, Emery Wenninger, Tatum Saucier, Hattie Bailey, Marley Atwell and Josie James.

A memorial service celebrating David’s earthly life will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church with Charlie Bailey officiating. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00 am and the celebration of his life will be at 11:00 am.

David, like his wife, donated his body to the LSU Science and Medical School in Shreveport, LA to allow students to learn and conduct research.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made to Hospice of Natchitoches or perform a random act of kindness in memory of David.

David’s family would like to send a very heartfelt thanks to Frank Sims who befriended David after the loss of his wife Venia. Frank’s friendship and support brought David joy and comfort to his family. Also, to Hospice of Natchitoches and Natchitoches Community Care for their compassion, love and dignity during this time.
