Lakeview smothers previously undefeated LaSalle for third straight win

SWALLOWED UP: The Lakeview defense swallows up a Montgomery running back in the backfield as the Gators defense has excelled in the past three weeks, allowing just six points in each contest.

CAMPTI – Trust.

That’s at the cornerstone of what Lakeview is building as the Gators added a huge brick Friday with a 28-6 rout of previously undefeated LaSalle.

Lakeview (3-1) scored all 28 points in the first half before the injury of quarterback CJ Jones, and the Gators defense took over from their to snatch the team’s third straight win, matching its longest winning streak since 2019.

“We got off to a fast start and scored early,” said Lakeview coach Brandon Helms. “Defensively, we had three fourth-down stops in the first half.

“We shut down their running game and were able to run and pass ourselves. The kids are buying in to the plan and trusting their reads. They trust the other guys to just do their jobs.”

Versatile weapon Dillon Pikes led the Gators on the ground and through the air receiving, totaling three touchdowns.

Running back Kaleb Collins accounted for the other touchdown as the Gators bruised Class 1A LaSalle, who had outscored its opponents 125-16 in its first three wins.

Now it’s the Gators with the lopsided margin in their last three contests, walloping their foes by a combined 98-18.

All three touchdowns that they Gators have allowed have come in the second half with the game already in hand.

Helms said quarterback Lamarrion Rushing came in and did an admirable job for the injured Jones, even though Lakeview didn’t add any more points.

“CJ had some great reads and runs before getting injured, but Lamarrion came in and did a good job,” Helms said. “In the second half, we just managed the game and let our defense work.”

Lakeview is perhaps emerging as the biggest threat in District 3-2A to reigning champs Many, who knocked off Isidore Newman and No. 1 quarterback prospect Arch Manning.

The Gators won’t see Many until Week 10, and before the district journey begins in Week 6, Lakeview will visit Delta Charter.
