NCHS rallies on road to top Captain Shreve

DRESSED TO IMPRESS: NCHS quarterback Brian Young impressed in his first full game back as a starter, throwing for 192 yards and running for 47 as the Chiefs topped Captain Shreve 30-17 on the road.

SHREVEPORT – Behind a balanced offense and defense that dominated the middle section of Friday’s game, Natchitoches Central earned a huge boost Friday with a convincing 30-17 win at Captain Shreve.

After Captain Shreve (3-4, 0-4 District 1-5A) opened the scoring, the Chiefs (3-4, 2-2) scored 24 straight points and fended off a late Gator rally attempt.

Captain Shreve didn’t have an answer for a resurgent NCHS offense that rushed for 238 yards and threw for another 192.

“We had every player on the field giving maximum effort,” said NCHS coach James Wilkerson. “When everyone does that at the same time, good things will happen. Everyone from me to our sophomores understood the importance of this week, and we needed maximum effort.

NCHS welcomed the return of quarterback Brian Young, who played his first full game after seeing limited action in the last two contests, and receiver Camryn Davis, who missed this past week with an injury.

Young, who missed the first four games of the season with a shoulder injury, looked more like his healthy self as he threw for 192 yards on an efficient 10-13 passing with two scores and added 48 rushing yards.

After Shreve’s Jamarlon Otis started the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run, Young found Davis for an 80-yard touchdown strike that powered NCHS’ surge.

Davis had 131 of his 147 receiving yards in the first half, finishing with two touchdown catches.

A Young 6-yard touchdown run handed the Chiefs a 12-6 lead before arguably turning the momentum tide for good in the second quarter.

“Having them both back and healthy, we can be dangerous with both of them playing at that level,” Wilkerson said.

Captain Shreve drove all the way to the NCHS 5-yard line before being turned away on downs, and the Chiefs responded with a 95-yard touchdown drive to go up 18-6. Running back Jeremiah Miles (162 yards) scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 43-yard scamper.

“Effort, effort and more effort on defense,” Wilkerson said. “We had some new starters out there, and those kids played hard.”

Captain Shreve was missing a host of its own starters, including impact players in quarterback Kenyon Terrell, running back Jayden Edwards and receiver Marquez Stevenson.

After a John Chance 28-yard field goal sliced the Shreve deficit to 18-9, Natchitoches Central crossed the goal line late in the first half on a 32-yard Davis touchdown catch.

A long Davis punt return set the Chiefs up with a short field, and a Miles 13-yard scoring run built a 30-9 lead early in the second half.

The Gators attempted to mount a comeback and got within striking distance at 30-17 on a Jordan Wiggins 10-yard touchdown run, but Shreve couldn’t sustain enough second-half drives to further dent the Chiefs’ advantage.

Shreve receivers JT Hester (88 yards on three catches) and Wiggins (78 yards on five receptions) led the way receiving on 214 passing yards on 14-31 from quarterback Brodie Savage, who was making his first varsity start.

NCHS running back Jeremiah Miles paced the rushing attach per usual with 165 rushing yards on 28 touches. Shreve counterpart Otis also went over the 100-yard mark with 105 yards.
