Lakeview basketball standouts get All-State recognition

The Lakeview High School basketball teams were filled with highlights, with the Lady Gators playing in the state finals, so it was fitting that both teams had standout players recognized on the Class 2A All-State team announced today.

Louisiana Sports Writers Association voters selected sophomore sensation Timberlyn Washington for the girls’ first-team All-State roster. The 5-3 guard averaged 21 points per game as the Lady Gators went 24-4.

On the boys’ All-State squad, Lakeview was represented by Alonzo Driver, who helped the Gators reach the state quarterfinals. Driver was an honorable mention selection, one of 16 joining the 10 players on the first or second-team chosen by the LSWA.

Newman senior Chris Lockett and coach Randy Livingston, along with Rosepine’s Addison Fruge, earned top honors.

The Louisiana Sports Writers Association selected Lockett and Fruge for its Outstanding Player awards after each won a state championship. Livingston, one of the most decorated high school players in Louisiana history, was selected as boys Coach of the Year.

Oakdale’s Renotta Edwards, whose Lady Warriors edged Lakeview 53-48 in the championship game, was selected as Class 2A Girls Coach of the Year. Edwards played basketball at Northwestern State.

Lockett earned the Class 2A Boys’ Outstanding Player honor for a second year in a row as he averaged 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and 1.5 steals and the Greenies won a second consecutive state championship.

Livingston, a former Newman star in his fourth season as coach at his alma mater, earned the top coaching honor for the first time. Under Livingston, Newman has reached the state final three years in a row and won twice.

Fruge, along with fellow first-team all-state selection Kelly Norris, led Rosepine to the Division III nonselect state championship. Fruge averaged 17 points with five rebounds, three assists and two steals as her team defeated Amite in the state final.
