CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Northwestern State tennis team aims for revenge on NJIT, as it begins Southland Conference Tournament play Friday morning.
Last season, the Highlanders upset the top-seeded Lady Demons in the semifinals of the conference tournament, 4-3.
NSU (12-8, 4-3 SLC), seeded fourth in this year’s SLC Tournament, drew a rematch with No. 5 NJIT (10-7). First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday in Corpus Christi.
The team’s meeting March 14 proved to be a dominant performance, as the Lady Demons came out with a 6-1 home victory.
The Lady Demons closed conference play with a 5-2 victory against Southeastern on April 13 to give NSU a three-game winning streak and resulted in a tie for third with McNeese.
“When we are prepared the best way possible and competing at the highest level, we are a very hard team to beat,” said head Coach Jonas Brobeck.
Paige Wise, a First Team All-SLC selection, enters the tournament having won five of her last six singles matches.
At the No. 2 spot, Ayu Ishibashi has won four singles matches in a row to earn a spot on the second team All-SLC.
The other selection for the all-conference team was the doubles tandem of Dorota Szczygielska and Sofi Garcia, which finished 5-0 in league play at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Tjasa Klevisar has won five of her last six singles matches at the top singles spot and sported a 5-2 mark in league play during the regular season.
For the Highlanders, Sandra Dzhambazov earned the tying point in last year’s match in the conference tournament, setting up NJIT for the victory.
The winner of Friday’s match will advance to the semifinals to play the winner of top-seeded Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and the victor of Thursday’s match between No. 8 Bryant and No. 9 Nicholls.
