After an impressive week where she allowed just one goal in two games, goalkeeper Libe Banuelos was named Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the conference announced Sept. 3.
Banuelos, a junior from Deusto, Basque, posted a pair of three-save games, recording six saves out of a total of seven shots on goal against UL Lafayette and Abilene Christian, both of which have not lost a game yet this season.
Last time out, she stopped three shots and came out of her line and thwarted other chances in a shutout of ACU.
Late in the game against ACU, she made a game-saving save to keep the shutout going and keep it tied.
Overall, her 32 saves rank second in the conference, only trailing McNeese’s Jackie Kelly’s 43.
It is her first SLC Goalkeeper of the Week award, also winning it Sept. 12, 2023, after recording a combined shutout at Jackson State and stopped 10 shots at LSU.
She is the first Lady Demon to collect a conference weekly award this season.
In addition to her back-to-back three-save performances, she also made 11 saves at SMU to open the season.
Banuelos and Northwestern return to the field Friday evening when it hosts Jackson State at the Northwestern State Soccer Complex before finishing the weekend with a trip to Alabama A&M on Sunday.
