St. Mary’s Wrestling makes strides with strong State Tournament finish

The St. Mary’s Catholic School Wrestling Team made a remarkable showing at the LHSAA Division III State Wrestling Tournament this past February, placing 10th overall out of 27 teams. What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is that the program has only been an official sport at St. Mary’s for three years.
The team sent seven wrestlers to the two-day tournament and placed five on the podium. “10th place may not seem that high, but we only competed in seven of the 14 weight classes due to the small size of our program,” said second-year head coach Rudy Glass. “As our program grows, we expect to become even more competitive in the division.”

Several athletes stood out with impressive performances. Senior and team captain Camden Litton earned 5th place in the 126lbs weight class with a major decision (10-1) over Basile. Sophomore Abram Nichols secured 6th place at the 144 lbs. Freshman Jacob Thibodaux claimed 5th place in the 157lbs weight class with a tech fall (19-3) over Opelousas Catholic. Freshman James Gannon Sheffield took 3rd place at 165lbs with a pin fall over Basile. Rounding out the podium placements, Sophomore John Paul Thibodaux earned 5th place in the 190lbs weight class with a tech fall (26-10) over Opelousas Catholic.

St. Mary’s is led by head coach Rudy Glass, with assistance from Adam Llorance, Scott Nichols, and Aaron Johnson. As the program continues to grow, the team looks forward to building on this year’s success and becoming a stronger force in the division. Any student-athletes in the area interested in wrestling and joining the St. Mary’s family are encouraged to contact the school or coaches at 352-8394. The school is excited to grow its wrestling program and welcomes the opportunity to discuss how student-athletes can be part of this rising team.

Congratulations to the St. Mary’s Wrestling Team on an outstanding performance and a job well done!
