Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Operations Bureau deputies were patrolling an apartment complex on April 18 around 7:40 pm, located in the 100 block of Louisiana Highway 119 in Natchez. Deputies observed a male and female involved in an apparent altercation. As deputies exited their unit to investigate, a male subject, later identified as Calvin A. Grimes, 19, of Natchitoches, fled the scene carrying a backpack.
Deputies pursued the suspect behind the complex, issuing verbal commands for him to stop. Grimes briefly returned to the front of the apartments near a parked vehicle and complied with deputies’ commands. During the interaction, Grimes stated he did not wish to pursue charges against the female involved in the altercation.
Deputies noted that Grimes was no longer in possession of the backpack, raising suspicions of possible criminal activity. A subsequent search of the area near the vehicle led to the discovery of the backpack, which emitted a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the backpack revealed approximately 207 grams (7.3 ounces) of suspected marijuana.
Grimes was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported and booked into the LaSalle Corrections/Natchitoches Detention Center on the following charges:
*Possession of CDS Schedule I (Marijuana)
*Criminal Obstruction of Justice
*Resisting an Officer
The suspected narcotics will be submitted to the crime laboratory for further analysis. Grimes remains in custody awaiting a bond hearing.
Deputies J. Creel and B. Keyser were involved in the arrest.
