Krewe of Excellence rolls out family fun

The 2026 Mardi Gras parade season began in grand style as Natchitoches’ Krewe of Excellence rolled with its third annual Mardi Gras parade on Jan. 10. An eclectic lineup of over 50 units included the Shriners, local businesses and dance schools as well as Natchitoches’ FAUNA who made its inaugural appearance with a pet themed float and throws. Former Natchitoches Sheriff Victor Jones served as Grand Marshal.

Visiting Krewes from around the state included Harambee, Imani and Khalua. The NCHS Band, “The Pride of the Tribe”, and the NJH band were joined by Shreveport’s Woodlawn High School, Magnolia School of Excellence and the Alexandria Middle Magnet school band. In addition to the bands, the superb NCHS, St. Mary’s and NJH spirit groups kept the crowd entertained with their high energy performances. There was no shortage of throws as eager paradegoers garnered a seemingly bottomless supply of beads, candy, and trinkets from passing floats.

The Krewe of Excellence King this year is Chad Nelson, Excellence XI and the Queen is Lori Woodard, Excellence XI. They ruled over the parade assisted by the Krewe’s Court and past royalty. After the parade, the fun continued on St. Denis street as the Krewe visited the St. Denis “Second Saturday” event and held a traditional second line.

The Krewe of Excellence parade has firmly established itself as an integral part of our area’s Mardi Gras scene. The parade was terrific family fun and another example of what makes life in our community special.
