NSU Writers: Great Teachers are the Key to an Excellent Education

I believe an excellent education can be accomplished when you have great teachers who love teaching. Growing up, I changed schools often in order to try and receive the best education possible. Some schools were stronger than others. I found that if a teacher was passionate about the subject they taught, their students seemed more confident and able to learn.

As a child, I disliked math and science classes the most. I had not been taught basic math skills so I was always struggling.  My science classes were taught straight from the textbook with no emphasis on how important science is to a student’s future success.  I was worried about how I was going to survive high school classes in Math and English without a good foundation.

After my first few Math, Science, and English classes in high school, I came to realize that I had not had motivated and inspiring teachers in the elementary years.  My high school teachers were passionate about the subjects they taught and they wanted their students to succeed.  They helped students who, like me, did not have a good foundation. My English teacher broke everything down to the basics. Aristotle once mentioned that “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”  I had never before experienced an English class where I genuinely loved learning.

My high school Math teacher helped me to enjoy learning math and is a true example of a teacher who lives the quote “Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning” (unknown).  He loved teaching math and never made a student feel as if they could not succeed. He always encouraged his students to try their best. He did what he could to help his students succeed not only in math class but in other classes as well.

In middle school, I learned mainly from a textbook and did not have an affinity for Science class. My high school Science teacher taught me that Science is not boring and worthless. In her class, students performed experiments, engaged in interactive games, and did dissections. It was a thrilling experience to feel the strength of a cow heart’s muscle wall and see the different heart valves.  I realized that Science was an awesome and extremely important subject to learn and appreciate.

An excellent education can only be accomplished when a student has been turned on to education and the student is being taught by a teacher who genuinely loves teaching. A teacher who understands that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” teaches to their students’ interests and gives their students motivation and courage to take on harder tasks (Nelson Mandela).

My English teacher helped me by not only teaching me the skills needed to write a paper, but how to communicate with the world around me in various ways. My math teacher not only taught Math, but that you can achieve anything you put your mind and heart into. My Science teacher taught me an appreciation for science and all its wonders. I believe that great teachers are the key to students achieving an excellent education they will appreciate and cherish for the rest of their lives.
