(Campti)-Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Detectives are actively investigating an overnight shooting that occurred on Feb. 23 around 10:50 pm in Campti that resulted in a 4-year-old child being hospitalized from a gunshot wound according to Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Stuart Wright.
NPSO Patrol Operations Bureau deputies responded to NATCOM 911 Center reports of “shots fired” in the 200 block of Lake Street in Campti. The caller requested immediate medical assistance due to a child suffering from a gunshot wound. NPSO Deputies and Natchitoches Regional Medical Center EMS responded to the scene. Campti Police Department is also assisting.
During the preliminary stages of the investigation, they learned two men exited a mobile home they were visiting on Lake Street. Shortly after exiting the mobile home and preparing to enter a 2012 Nissan Altima, multiple rounds were fired into the vehicle by an unknown suspect(s). One victim that entered the vehicle while the shots were being fired was grazed by a bullet in the head. He did not require medical attention.
Shortly after the shooting, family members discovered that a 4-year-old child standing in the mobile home had been struck by the gunfire and was suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm. Family members began immediate first aid until deputies arrived to relieve them awaiting EMS arrival. Detectives assigned to the NPSO Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene.
Detectives photographed and collected multiple bullet casings as they processed the crime scene and interviewed witnesses throughout the evening.
The child was transported by EMS to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and later transferred to an undisclosed regional trauma center with what was believed to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
Sheriff Wright stated that our detectives have been working throughout the day interviewing the victims and witnesses and following up on leads in an effort to identify the suspect or suspects involved in this senseless shooting.”
