What are cover crops

By Katie Bedgood, Lakeview FFA Chapter Member

The definition of a cover crop is a crop intended to cover the soil without being harvested. A cover crop has many different purposes and is most commonly used for farms but is also useful for gardens. A cover crop can help reduce erosion and nutrient runoff in your field or garden. Another benefit of cover crops is that they increase your soil fertility which is the ability of soil to sustain plant growth and optimize crop yield. A few most commonly used crops include tillage radish, ryegrass seeds , and  clover seeds.
