Six seniors from Lakeview High School and Natchitoches Central High School were recognized for their academic excellence as they were presented with scholarships from Grambling State University at a ceremony at the Ben D. Johnson Center on Monday, May 1.
Trinity Browder, John Burton, Jr., Ma’Kira Carpenter, Nyla Helaire, Kylon McGuire and Zion Smith will be attending Grambling in the fall. They were each presented with a well-earned Grambling State University Academic Scholarship by Dr. Alan Jackson, Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships at Grambling State University.
The Natchitoches Chapter of the Grambling State University Alumni Association organized the Signing Day awards ceremony for the young men and women and invited Dr. Jackson, who graciously accepted. The idea for Signing Day originated with former First Lady Michelle Obama who conceived it as a means to celebrate our nation’s young people as they move on to college, the military or training after high school. As they accepted their scholarships, each senior signed a pledge to work hard and complete their studies.
A big thank you to Dr. Jackson for taking time from his busy schedule to drive to Natchitoches and present these young men and women with a life changing opportunity. We would also like to commend the Natchitoches Chapter of the Grambling State University Alumni Association for organizing the ceremony and for their tireless efforts in uplifting our community’s young people. Lastly, we wish all the best to the young men and women awarded scholarships tonight. Work hard, achieve and make us proud! We look forward to seeing good things from all of you.
