Celebrate National Library Card Sign-up Month

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries across the US, including your local library, will unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. Plus, the Natchitoches Parish Library (NPL) will have end-of-the-month prize drawings for those that visit the library. To enter, pick up a “loyalty card” at any circulation desk and have a staff member sign it each day you go the library. Prizes include a crawfish pot and boiler and a Fire tablet (from the Friends of the NPL).

Throughout the school year, NPL staff will assist parents and caregivers while saving them hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to STEAM programs and activities, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help, and technology workshops, to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available to residents, workers, and students in Natchitoches Parish.

Keep an eye out for your local library this month at one of the high school football games, on campus at NSU, and on the riverbank at the Meat Pie Festival. The library makes a special effort to reach parish residents where they are to inform them about all the resources available to them and their families. To invite the NPL to speak at your organization or attend an event you may email info@natlib.org or call 318-357-3280.

You can always sign up for your free Natchitoches Parish Library (NPL) card by simply texting “LIBRARYCARD” to 318-357-3280 or visiting any circulation desk at either branch location. There is nothing more empowering than signing up for your own library card. Through access to technology, media resources, and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and passions.

Once you have your card, you will have access to early literacy programs, live and virtual homework help, resume writing and career assistance, ACT/SAT and HiSET practice testing, along with digital checkout of books, and online access to learning modules for coding, photography, social media marketing, and other professional development video courses.

The NPL exists to share these assets with parish residents, providing the opportunity to transform lives through knowledge, connection, and community. For a full schedule of NPL classes and events, visit natlib.org and follow the NPL on social media.
