7th graders pay tribute to Charles McGee with inspiring artwork

In a dazzling display of artistic talent, Natchitoches Junior High School 7th-grade students have joined forces to create mesmerizing paper sculptures, drawing inspiration from the late New York Artist, Charles McGee.

Charles McGee’s legacy as an American artist and educator has left an indelible mark on the world of art. Known for his exceptional paintings, assemblages, and sculptures, his work can be admired in prestigious collections, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

For this project, our young artists embarked on a journey to explore the profound impact of lines and shapes in their art. Through their creations, they discovered that these fundamental elements possess the ability to guide the viewer’s eye, evoke powerful emotions, and inspire boundless creativity.

Charles McGee’s influence on generations of artists as a “father figure” and mentor was a natural fit for this endeavor. His dedication to teaching and nurturing artistic talents resonates deeply with our students, who have embraced his spirit in their work.

This collaborative effort has not only showcased the budding talent of our young artists but has also provided them with a unique opportunity to pay tribute to an artistic icon. The resulting paper sculptures are a testament to their creativity, dedication, and the enduring legacy of Charles McGee.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated art teacher, Mr. Alford, for his invaluable guidance and unwavering commitment to nurturing the artistic talents of our students. It is under his expert tutelage that this project has flourished, allowing our students to shine.

As we celebrate the remarkable achievements of our 7th graders, we invite the community to explore their artwork and experience the profound influence of Charles McGee’s work on the next generation of artists. It’s a powerful testament to the enduring impact of art education and the indomitable spirit of creativity.
