Garden Club sows seeds to help community grow

By Rachel Key, NSU E- Lab 4-H Garden Club President

NSU E-LAB has a great garden club that’s used to teach others how to garden. Honestly, it’s the best way to get a fresh snack. We’re always getting creative in ways to make our garden the best garden teaching tools for others. We’ve done many demonstrations such as the importance of pollinators and composting. We do lots of crafts to further our classmates’ education in gardening.

We are now helping with activities that will promote and make our city’s new educational garden successful. This garden is called Victoria’s Educational Garden and it is located right behind East Natchitoches Elementary School. Our garden leader Victoria Wiggins has taught us how to prepare a bed and plant different seeds and much more. This is a great space given to us by the NPSB. We currently have seven beds that will soon be filled with delicious veggies for us to eat. We will be sharing this garden with the community. We will teach lessons and share the food.

We have many members in the Garden club who love our garden. Here are some reasons our members think our garden club is so great:

“Our garden club is so awesome because we learn ways to garden and make healthy food choices. We don’t just garden, we get creative! We participate in demonstrations and make crafts,” said Emery Wenninger, NSU E-Lab’s 4-H reporter.

“The garden club is great because we have many awesome and willing members. Members that like to work in the garden,” Club Secretary Maisie Mangum stated.

“The garden serves as the best possible outside classroom where learning truly is alive,” Wiggins said.

Right now we are involved in painting a plank for the garden’s fence.  This is a contest that anyone can participate in. Stay tuned to find out the latest on our garden adventures.
