Strong pitching performances helped the baseball teams from Natchitoches Central and St. Mary’s score district victories Thursday.
Sophomore right-hander Trey Scarborough of St. Mary’s struck out seven and held Logansport hitless in a six-inning, run-rule 10-0 District 1-3A road win. He walked three and threw 91 pitches, 53 strikes, while facing 23 batters.
Playing at Brown-Stroud Field on the NSU campus, Natchitoches Central got a combined two-hitter from Ross Lindsey and Harper Marcotte in a 3-1 victory over Byrd in a District 1-5A contest.
Lindsey, the senior lefty, struck out seven in five innings and earned the win, with Marcotte keeping the Yellow Jackets quiet over the final two frames.
NCHS notched its 20th win (20-7) and moved to 7-5 in district heading into a rematch Saturday in Shreveport to cap the league season.
The Chiefs got a leadoff walk in the second inning by Laden Rawls, then a bunt single from Lannon Collum. Kyron Payne bunted in the first run on a sacrifice and Yancy Spillman’s ground out RBI made it 2-0.
Byrd cut the lead in half in the top of the third, but NCHS padded the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on Dillon Braxton’s RBI single.
St. Mary’s improved to 17-11 overall and a perfect 7-0 in District 3-1A. The Tigers took command in their first chance, plating four runs in the top of the first. Payne Williams doubled in a run and Connor Jordan drove in another with a single, then Scarborough scored Williams on a sacrifice fly and Preston Martinez delivered an RBI single.
Williams and Jordan each contributed three hits, including doubles, as St. Mary’s collected 10 safeties in the rout, aided by six Logansport errors.
