Home in the Hamptons – Ten Dogs Get a New Life

Ten puppies that were rescued from a rural area of our parish and who were facing an uncertain future were sent on a flight to a new life in New York, Saturday, April 13 at the Natchitoches Airport.

Our local animal welfare group, FAUNA, was dealing with the difficulty of getting 10 puppies adopted locally. They turned to Trisha Ray of Save Some Souls, a network of volunteer pilots who fly animals from shelters to their forever homes. The pilots volunteer their time and aircraft to pick up and deliver animals in a nation-wide network. The volunteers of FAUNA were able to find people in New York who were more than happy to adopt the 10 puppies. Save Some Souls stepped in to provide the transportation.

Volunteer pilot Mike Ellis welcomed his rambunctious passengers to their flight to Memphis. From there, they will go on to Indianapolis before reaching their final destination in Islip, NY. Ellis, who is an Air Traffic Controller when he is not ferrying animal across the country, has flown over 500 rescued animals to new homes in his 14 years with Save Some Souls.

The FAUNA volunteers were joined by Jess Favre and Anderson Kelly in bathing the puppies before their flight-no small task!  Mr. Favre is the Project Superintendent for the construction of NSU’s new Alost Hall. He also has donated his time and skills to repairing and maintaining the shelter. Miss Kelly is a junior at the LSMSA and future veterinarian. She is from Natchitoches and came to the LSMSA from St. Mary’s.
