No, I am not running for mayor!
Now that I have your attention, though, it is important for voters to know that the councilperson-at-large also serves as the mayor pro tem, meaning they would step into the mayor’s position if needed on a temporary or permanent basis.
If that opportunity were to present itself, my leadership experience has prepared me to lead the City of Natchitoches. As NSU’s Athletic Director for 26 years, I managed a budget similar in size to that of the city, made difficult and at times unpopular decisions, and galvanized various constituencies (coaches, staff, student-athletes, alumni); I would have the ability to do the same for the city council, staff, and most importantly, for the citizens. Please consider my leadership on a local, state, and national level (selected for several NCAA committees, most recently the Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Committee) when voting. And please visit my website – gregburke.net – for additional information about my background.
I also want to reiterate a point made in last week’s journal column. The vote of 61 percent of voters in the primary expressed a desire for a new representative in the council-at-large position. In other words, just 39 percent of the voters were in favor of maintaining the status quo.
Of that 61 percent, 29 percent of those votes were cast for the two candidates who did not advance to this runoff. I encourage those who comprised that 29 percent to stay consistent with their stance for a new councilperson-at-large and give me the honor of representing the people in all corners of Natchitoches.
Finally, it has been an honor to be a part of the campaign process regardless of the results. I have said all along that my motivation for pursuing the council-at-large office begins with four words – “I Believe in Natchitoches” – and that will continue to be my mantra. It has been enjoyable to see friends across town on the campaign trail while also meeting others for the first time who are passionate about our community, its direction, and its future.
Please remember that voting for this Saturday’s runoff election will be held at your local voting location (go to geauxvote.com to confirm your location) from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you were not able to vote during the early election dates, please commit to doing so on Saturday. Do it for yourself and do it for our/your community.
One more time – All for One, One for All, ALL for Natchitoches!
Paid for by the campaign to elect Greg Burke.
