Deputies and EMS arrived on scene finding a juvenile suffering from serious injuries.

Air EVAC medical helicopter was dispatched to the crash and landed at a landing zone in a field near the intersections of Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 119 in Derry.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 13-year-old Derry juvenile operating a 1990s model Honda ATV was traveling northbound on the Cat Island Road when he entered a curve. For reasons still under investigation, the all-terrain vehicle left the road on the right side traveling down a steep embankment striking a tree.

The juvenile who was not wearing a safety helmet was ejected after impact.

The juvenile’s brother who was riding as a passenger and believed to have been ejected from the vehicle prior to the crash and uninjured was able to run to EMS Paramedic Larry Atteredge’s residence to notify him of the crash.

The all-terrain vehicle came to a rest in Cane River after impact.

NPSO deputies, NPFD #1, EMS and private citizens had to mobilize, lift and carry the injured juvenile up a 30-foot embankment to an awaiting trauma unit at the scene.

The investigation is continuing by Troopers assigned to LSP Troop-E Alexandria.

Deputies remind riders that it is illegal to ride all-terrain vehicles on public roadways. Always wear safety equipment while riding, and avoid distractions.

We extend our prayers to the juvenile, his family and hope for a full recovery.
