St. Augustine Historical Society’s honorary lifetime board members, Gloria Jones and Dr. Pete Gregory gathered with others on Sept. 27 to celebrate a substantial milestone, giving their appreciation and approval of the remarkable progress.
Restoring the Badin-Roque House became a SAHS goal in 2014 with the idea for creating a park at the historic site by the late Van Lacour Jr. Faithful and resilient efforts faced limited funds in a post-pandemic economy and proved to be ultimately successful. The Louisiana State Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and later, the State of Louisiana were major financial contributors among many others who contributed valuable time, talent, and treasures.
It is anticipated that the public grand opening will occur before the end of 2024, culminating a long and faithful journey to save the 1700’s house for the next generation to enjoy. SAHS leader, Mark Guidry states, “The new Park environment marks the site of the first convent and school for St Augustine Catholic Church Parish on Isle Brevelle in 1856.”
Prior to the grand opening, self tour plaques and a historical marker will be installed along with finishing touches to make the area safe and secure for tourists.
