There was nary an empty space in NSU’s Orville J. Hanchey Gallery Thursday, October 31 as Northwestern State University’s Art Department hosted its “Showcase, Showcase, Showcase!” Faculty & Student Art Exhibit. The first floor as well as both galleries upstairs were filled with 244 works by NSU Art majors and their professors. The pieces encompassed an eclectic variety of art, including sculpture, photography, ceramics, painting, figure drawing, printmaking, jewelry and new media.
At least two of the artworks had deep personal meaning for their creators. Anna Taylor Poe had five ceramic pieces that commemorated her late grandparents by incorporating leaves from their property. Her fellow student Carol Kirkland honored her late husband with her “Memory of the One” ceramic wall piece by having some of his ashes mixed in the piece’s glazing along with some of his favorite sheet music and photograph.
The exhibition is the first in what will hopefully become an annual event. NSU’s Art Department is a wonderfully creative environment and is an ideal place to develop your artistic talents and abilities.
