NSU E-Lab Celebrates Veterans Day

A local tradition for well over 10 years, the NSU E-Lab school held its Veteran’s Day Program Friday, November 15 at the school. The program began with a procession of veterans escorted by E-Lab 4-H members. The NCHS Junior Army ROTC Color Guard posted the colors while the school’s 4-H officers led the singing of the National Anthem accompanied by Dr. Samuel Stokes and vocal teacher D’Nissa Hester. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Sophie Bynog and Carson Gentry called for a moment of silence to honor deceased veterans after which the school presented a slide show of students’ family members who were veterans. Deployed naval officer and father of E-Lab student Grant Campbell brought greetings via video.

This year’s Veterans’ Day program also featured an essay and poster contest. Fifth grader Waylon Hymes earned first place in the essay contest. Fifth grader Caroline Stewart won first place in the poster contest, followed by Fifth grader Charlee Ducote and fourth grader Revill Dean.

The keynote speaker was Army veteran and NCHS Army JROTC Instructor Major Duane Bailey who gave a relatable and humorous talk about veterans.

The program concluded with a student group singing “Thank You Soldiers”. As with the program at NCHS and Lakeview, the event was well organized and displayed some superbly talented students. The NSU E-Lab Veterans’ Day Program is a wonderful example of small-town life at its best.
