Robeline News: Week of December 11

By Courtney Freeman

The Robeline Heritage Society will meeting on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 4 pm. Everyone is invited to come and participate as we plan for next year’s fundraisers and festivities.

While the Sabine Bank is certainly progressing there is still not an estimate of when it will officially be reopened for business.

The Sabine clinic has also hit another snag as the highway department does not want to allow them to use the Highway 6 access driveways that were grandfathered in with the old building. They want the clinic to only have a driveway onto Cotton Gin Street, which would cause some very serious congestion in the parking lot and onto the street. Hopefully they will allow an easement because one driveway will just be a mess.

For years there has been a discussion of making Highway 6 into four lanes because it is part of the El Camino Real. But honestly I don’t think it is logical to ever think it will come through Robeline. Therefore an easement would be of great benefit. Between businesses being grandfathered in and being mere feet from the highway and historically, protected buildings having four lanes just isn’t feasible. If and when it was to ever come to fruition, Robeline will either be bypassed in some fashion or will condense down to the original two lanes while in the city limits and open back up to four lanes on the outside.

Seeing as Highway 6 is just now being overlaid and patched in any substantial way in the past 15-20 years without expansion, I don’t think a possible four-lane should be a worry or concern for anyone.

Also remember that Robeline will hold its Christmas parade next weekend on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3 pm.
