Traffic stop results in stolen firearm recovery

A recent traffic stop has led to the arrest of a Red River Parish man and recovery of a stolen firearm, according to Sheriff Stuart Wright. NPSO Patrol Operations Bureau deputies were patrolling in the City of Natchitoches when they stopped a 2020 Dodge Charger on Jan. 6 around 5:26 pm near the intersections of Texas and 3rd Streets for a traffic violation.

Deputies identified the driver of the vehicle as Kornerlius Ware, 18 of Coushatta. Deputies say Ware and his passengers were acting extremely nervous during the traffic stop. A deputy assigned to the NPSO Criminal Patrol Unit arrived as a back-up unit.

Deputies asked Ware if he had any weapons in the vehicle in which he replied, “Yes, in the glove box.”

Deputies obtained permission to obtain the weapon, a SAR 9mm semi-automatic handgun, with one loaded magazine, and two empty magazines. During a NCIC weapons computer check, deputies learned the firearm had been reported stolen to the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office.

As a result:
Kornerlius Ware, 18, of Coushatta was placed under arrest without incident, transported and booked into the LaSalle Corrections/Natchitoches Detention Center charged with Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Vehicle Equipment Violations.

A hold was placed on Ware for Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office. The recovered firearm will be turned to the NPSO Criminal Investigations Bureau then released to the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office for investigative purposes. Involved in the arrest were: Sgt. D. Halliburton and Cpl. S. Dieter.
