Thompson named to all-academic team

While her position on the court may have changed, Reaghan Thompson’s excellence in Northwestern State’s prestigious nursing program did not.

For the second straight season Thompson was named to the Southland Conference’s All-Academic Team, earning a spot on the second team, the league office announced on Thursday.

Southeastern outside hitter Cicily Hidalgo was named the conference’s student-athlete of the year.

Academic all-conference teams are compiled based on votes from the league’s coaches, academic staffs and sports information directors. All honorees must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA and played in at least half of the team’s game during the season.

Thompson made the move from middle blocker, where she led the conference in total blocks and blocks per sets in each of the past two seasons, to a six-rotation outside hitter in 2024, her first time to ever play the position.

The junior took to the position immediately with kill-dig double-doubles in each of her first two matches of the season, the first 20-kill match by an NSU player since 2019 and earned offensive player of the week honors following opening weekend.

She finished the season as the only player in the Southland to rank in the top 10 in the conference in kills per set (3.51), points per set (4.08) and digs per set (3.29). Thompson led all non-liberos in digs for the year with 293.

The Kemah, Texas, native finished the season with six straight kill-dig double-doubles among her 13 total for the year. Among those were the first 20-kill, 20-dig match for NSU since 2019, one of just three such match in the conference in 2024.

While putting up her typical eye-popping performances on the court, Thompson maintained a 3.65 GPA in NSU’s highly-touted nursing program and advanced through the second level of clinicals during the 2024 season.

Thompson was also named second-team All-Louisiana, her third selection as one of the top volleyball players in the state of Louisiana.
