Natchez faces potential loss of over $1.5M in sewer improvement grant

The Village of Natchez is at risk of losing more than $1.5 million in state funding for sewer system improvements due to failure to meet a key grant condition, according to a recent notification from the Office of Community Development – Local Government Assistance (OCD-LGA).

The funding, awarded through the Water Sector Program’s first round, required the village to complete a rate study and implement its recommendations to ensure sustainable utility rates. Despite the study being completed by the Louisiana Rural Water Association (LRWA) and presented at multiple council meetings, no action has been taken by the village council to enact the suggested rate adjustments.

According to the letter addressed to Mayor Patsy Ward-Hoover, if the village does not comply by March 27, 2025, and submit documentation of the rate changes, it will be required to repay all funds received under the grant. The consequences of such a repayment could pose significant financial strain on the village.

For now, local officials have a critical decision ahead as the deadline approaches. The outcome could determine whether Natchez secures the funding necessary for much-needed infrastructure improvements or faces the burden of repaying the substantial sum already allocated.
