NSU’s Blake earns second SLC Player of the Week award

For the third time in six weeks, Northwestern State has claimed the Southland Conference Player of the Week.

And for the second time, it was Mya Blake who took home the honor announced Monday.

Blake, a senior transfer who previously starred for two Division II California programs, earned the SLC award after  she averaged 21 points per game, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists and led the Demons to a pair of road wins against Nicholls and McNeese.

Fourth-place Northwestern, riding a Blake-fueled four-game win streak,  begins a season-ending string of five home games in the last seven outings Thursday in Prather Coliseum when second-place Lamar visits.

Blake led NSU in scoring in both wins, including 32 points in a key victory at Nicholls on just 19 shots to push the Demons (12-10, 9-4) to a 68-60 road win.

She followed that with a near-double-double against McNeese, recording 10 points and eight assists to spark  Northwestern to a dominant 80-56 romp.

She did not need to carry the scoring load, but was more than happy to help contribute to it, dishing out eight assists, which tied a season high and were the most during Southland Conference play.

Blake is one of two Southland players to have won the SLC Player of the Week award twice, joining Nicholls’ Tanita Swift, who claimed the honor twice in the season’s first three weeks.

She also joins Vernell Atamah as the Demons to win the award this season.

Overall, she leads the SLC in both overall scoring (17.3 points per game) and scoring during league play (19.4). Her four assists per game in SLC play ranks in the top five in the conference.

Blake and the Demons embark on a pivotal stretch, playing the top three teams in the league in a row beginning with home dates this week against Lamar and third-place Stephen F. Austin (Saturday).
