The Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels visited Northwestern State University on Monday, February 24 at the Friedman Memorial Student Union. The traveling exhibit is the result of over 50 years of collecting by Curator Angela Jenkins of South Carolina.
The exhibit featured several hundred pieces of art, mementoes and artifacts that trace African American history from 1860 to the present day. From slavery to the era of King Cotton and segregation, lynching, and the Civil Rights movement, the exhibit combined art, photographs and artifacts to weave a compelling narrative of Black history.
After visiting NSU, Ms. Jenkins and her museum will travel to Mississippi before returning to Louisiana to visit Dillard University in New Orleans and a subsequent trip to Georgia.
