It is just not Mardi Gras in Natchitoches until the Krewe of Wag-uns parade rolls! The long-standing local tradition, now sponsored by FAUNA (Friends All United for Natchitoches Animals), rolled on March 1 in downtown Natchitoches, prior to the Krewe of Dionysos parade. This year’s parade featured beads, trinkets and family fun for all ages.

Over 50 animals, many in Mardi Gras themed costumes, joined their owners in a parade down Front Street that ended at the riverbank stage. They were joined by McGruff the Crime Dog, Vic the Demon from NSU, BOM’s Monty the Owl and Sparky the Fire Dog. The mascots engaged in a spirited dance-off with the winner chosen by audience reaction. Queen Mutt-a-Gras and King Rex Rufus were crowned, and prizes awarded in such categories as best float and best costume.
