Natchitoches City Council declares April Child Abuse Prevention Month in support of CASA

In a heartfelt show of support for vulnerable children in the community, the Natchitoches City Council proclaimed April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, recognizing the work of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Central Louisiana.

Councilman Petite introduced Resolution No. 030 of 2025, which emphasizes the importance of child safety, family support, and community involvement in preventing abuse and neglect. “CASA’s work is vital,” he said. “They stand up for children when those children have no one else.”

Emily Dahl, Director of CASA of Central Louisiana, addressed the council, thanking them for their recognition. “Last year, our program served 120 children who experienced abuse or neglect, most of whom were under 10 years old,” she said. “We currently have 24 active volunteers, but we need more. Every child deserves a safe and permanent home.”

Do outlined CASA’s process, noting that volunteers undergo training, are sworn in by a judge, and serve as consistent advocates for children navigating the foster care system. “You’re often the one constant voice in that child’s life,” she explained. “Our volunteers ensure that children receive the services they need—whether it’s counseling, tutoring, or even medical care.”

The Council offered strong words of support. Mayor Ronnie Williams Jr. shared a recent national story of extreme neglect as a reminder of why CASA’s mission is so critical. “It’s unthinkable what some children go through,” he said. “CASA gives them hope and a voice.”

For those interested in becoming CASA volunteers, Dahl encouraged the community to reach out and begin the process. “You can change a child’s life,” she said.
