What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The day has since become a celebration of African American Freedom. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday.
The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to celebrate responsibly and reflect on the historical significance of this important day.
