Northwestern State University’s 5th level BSN nursing students are teaming up with Leah Pagels, RN, and Natchitoches Regional Medical Center (NRMC) to offer a free community class on breastfeeding and infant safety. The event will take place on Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. in the Legacy Room at NRMC, located at 501 Keyser Avenue.
The class aims to provide vital education to new and expecting parents in an effort to reduce the infant mortality rate in Natchitoches Parish, which currently stands at 11.4%—a figure significantly higher than Louisiana’s already elevated statewide rate of 7.7%. Organizers hope that by addressing early-life safety and breastfeeding support, they can help bring these numbers down.
The event is free and open to the public, and walk-ins are welcome. However, attendees are encouraged to register in advance by calling 318-214-4335.
Topics covered include:
- Breastfeeding Education (taught by Leah Pagels, RN)
- Proper latch technique
- Understanding baby’s hunger cues
- Overcoming breastfeeding challenges
- The benefits of breastfeeding
- Milk production
- Infant Safety Education (taught by NSU nursing students)
- Safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of SUIDS (sudden unexpected infant death syndrome)
- Appropriate infant dress and coverings
- Importance of infant CPR (resources provided)
The session is designed to be approachable and encouraging for new moms and caregivers, especially those who may be struggling with breastfeeding or who want to better understand infant safety practices.
