Backbone fire grows to 1,200 acres in Kisatchie Hills, trails and scenic areas closed

The Backbone Fire continues to burn within the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness Area located in Natchitoches Parish. The wildfire is approximately 1,200 acres as of Aug. 10.

Wildland firefighters are busy preparing containment lines and performing burn out operations. A burn out removes fuel (vegetation) between a wildfire and a control line, preventing the wildfire from spreading further.

As a reminder, the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness Area (which includes the Backbone, High Ridge, and Turpentine Trails), Longleaf Vista, and the Longleaf Vista Interpretive Trail are CLOSED to the public.

Use caution if traveling the Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway due to smoke and fire fighters in the vicinity. For questions, contact the Kisatchie National Forest Supervisor’s Office at (318)473-7160.
