State officials warn of fake ‘Louisiana Department of Vehicles’ text scam

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) is warning residents about scam text messages falsely claiming to be from the “Louisiana Department of Vehicles.” The fraudulent messages threaten legal action over unpaid traffic violations and urge recipients to click a link.

Officials stressed that these messages are fake. The OMV does not operate under the name “DMV” and will not send unsolicited texts demanding payment or threatening legal consequences.

Residents are urged to follow these precautions to avoid falling victim to scams:

Do not click on links in unsolicited messages from unverified sources
Do not respond or provide personal information via text
Delete suspicious texts and emails and report them to reportfraud.ftc.gov
Use caution with communications from unknown sources
Verify that any message comes from a legitimate source
Watch for common scam signs, including promises of rewards, vague website addresses, and grammatical errors
The OMV encourages the public to share this warning, particularly with individuals who may be more vulnerable to scams.
