While the police academy provides state-mandated foundational training for law enforcement officers, the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office is committed to going above and beyond. This week, NPSO deputies participated in enhanced in-service training sessions focusing on traffic stops and handcuffing techniques — critical skills that reinforce safety, efficiency, and professionalism in the field.
The training sessions were designed to refresh and expand deputies’ practical knowledge and ensure that they are up to date on current best practices. Scenarios included high-risk traffic stops, officer approach techniques, subject control, and the proper application of handcuffs under various conditions.
“We want to ensure that our deputies are not only meeting the minimum training standards, but exceeding them,” said Sheriff Stuart Wright. “By providing this type of hands-on, scenario-based training, we’re investing in the safety of both our deputies and the community.”
This proactive approach underscores NPSO’s dedication to continuous professional development and public safety. The department plans to continue hosting regular in-service trainings throughout the year, covering a range of law enforcement topics.
NPSO Patrol Major and Director of Training Jesse Taitano extended his appreciation to the training staff, committed volunteers, and all deputies who actively participated in the recent training sessions. Their collective efforts and professionalism were instrumental in ensuring the success of the training, which continues to enhance the readiness and effectiveness of our deputies in serving the community.
